This morning on Mix102.3’s Hayley & Max in the Morning, everyone, from punters to the Premier, was sending messages or calling following the announcement of Travis Boak’s retirement after 19 seasons playing for Port Adelaide.
The three-time all-Australian had played 384 games and was captain of the club from 2013-2018.
The “Bye Bye Boakie Hotline” was set up by Mix to reminisce on favourite moments and memories of the player.
You can listen to some of those tributes and more below.
Comments included:
- “I feel happy and sad…he’s left behind a good legacy”
- “It’s an emotional mess for me. That number 10 guernsey, I hope no one ever wears that again, that’s his!”
- “The fact that he didn’t win a premiership just gutters me to my core. He is the one person I believe in football career that should have had that win and that enjoyment”
- Miles with tears says, “Thank you, Mr Boak…we’re a family at Port Adelaide, so thank you Mr Travis Boak, we will miss you!”
- “As a man but as a footballer, the selfless sacrifices that he has made not only to boys and girls across our state, but across other football clubs, he’s just shown up and he’s been him.”
7News anchor Rosanna Mangiarelli said:
“For me, it’s like he’s been there the whole time I’ve had kids, so my children every time they’ve watched they’ve had Travis Boak in it. One of my memories is I was honoured and privileged to present his John Cahill medal in 2019…that was a cool moment for me. It’s going to be a sad match, his last match.”
Premier Peter Malinauskas also shared his praise:
“Even if you’re a Crows fan, you got to acknowledge how this level of longevity only comes with extraordinary resilience, and he is a star, and it will be hard to replicate him. In a cut throat industry, players come and go, coaches come and go pretty quickly, but between him and Ken, they’ve stood the test of time and I’ve got nothing but regard for that.”
Boak will wrap up at the end of this season with his beloved Port Adelaide not set to make the top 8.
