Netball gets its own digital radio channel

In a win for fans of netball in Australia, ABC Local Radio and ABC Grandstand Digital Radio will broadcast all of Australia’s pool games and all the knock out games live from the Netball World Championships in Singapore.

Manager of ABC Grandstand Craig Norenbergs says Grandstand is leading the way in ensuring Australians have access to the widest possible range of sport on the radio:

“Australia has an incredible record at major netball events and this year they are going for back-to-back titles. I’m really pleased we are able to broadcast so many games from these Championships to the sport loving public of Australia.”

Simone Thurtell will call the action alongside Australia’s injured captain Sharelle McMahon. Thurtell commentated a variety of sports for ABC TV, including netball and basketball before moving to Radio Sport to work on the Sydney Olympic Games, where she called the Women’s beach volleyball gold medal won by Natalie Cook and Kerry Pottharst. Since 2000 Simone has been a part of Grandstand’s coverage of the Athens and Beijing Olympics, as well as the Manchester and Melbourne Commonwealth Games, presented Drive on ABC1233 Newcastle, and covered a range of sports for various ABC networks.

The international netball competition will run July 3 – 10, with all Australian games broadcast on a combination of ABC Local Radio, ABC Grandstand Digital Radio and streamed online at abc.net.au/grandstand.
