New digital station launched by DMG and Virgin Mobile

dmg Radio and Virgin Mobile have launched a new digital radio station called Radio Free by Virgin Mobile. The station will be on air in Brisbane and streamed online, with programming led by Virgin Mobile Lounge Members.

The concept was created by dmg Radio, in collaboration with media agency MPG, as part of a long term partnership with Virgin Mobile.

dmg’s Digital Product Manager Mohit Bhargava says: “Radio Free by Virgin Mobile is the country’s first fully branded radio offering that has no visible link to an existing radio network being hosted by dmg Radio via the Virgin Mobile Members Lounge.”

The station “gives control back to our members,” says Virgin Mobile’s Acting Marketing Director Dan Woodall.

By voting for their favourite songs, they can relive their experiences from the likes of St Jerome’s Laneway Festival, Splendour in the Grass and the Virgin Mobile Metro. All things music and festival form an integral part of Virgin’s heritage. It’s important for us to continue this legacy, from live events like V-Festival through to providing a high quality broadcast experience and available 24/7.”

Radio Free by Virgin Mobile isn’t only for Virgin Mobile ears, anyone can tune in to the new station via Ninemsn’s The Fix, Pagesdigital website, Pedestrian TV website, an iPhone application and dmg Radio Australia’s online radio players.

The station pays homage to the digital radio broadcaster Radio Free Virgin, the digital broadcaster founded in the late 1990s by Sir Richard Branson.

From this weekend listeners can tune in to the Nova Network on Sunday nights from 10pm for the new ‘Radio Free by Virgin Mobile’ show. The show will play the most popular songs of the week as voted by Virgin Mobile customers and listeners.
