New media show debuts on Radio National this week

Tim Burrowes has been a journalist for more than 30 years and has written about the media for the last 20 of those years.

Beginning this week, he and co-host Vivienne Kelly, a former reporter and editor for Radio Today, will present a weekly media show on Radio National.

Called MediaLand, the show will air on Fridays in the specialist program timeslot of 5.30pm.

“It won’t be media watch on the radio,” Burrowes told radioinfo’s Steve Ahern.

What we are doing is very deliberately casting a wide net, we will cover all things media.

“It’s not about journalism and ethics, it will be wider than that, it will look at the culture and business of media and its effect on the world.

“Media is a huge employer, so we will cover business, but we will also be looking through the lens of the impact media has on Australian life. It’s a busy industry, there will be no quiet weeks!”

Burrowes and Kelly have recorded various practice pilots but have not put the first real program together yet. They plan to record on a Friday morning and may eventually “get into a rhythm of doing the show live.”

They had a planning meeting today to choose topics for the first show. “We have 7 or 8 topics in the frame at the moment, we will probably choose three of them, but it’s too early to say. Media moves so fast that we want to be topical,” said Burrowes.

After a reporting career in the UK and Middle East, Tim Burrowes came to Australia in 2006 to editB&T Weekly before launching the media and marketing industry publication Mumbrella in 2008. He remained with Mumbrella until the end of 2021 when he and his business partners sold the business and began the Unmade media and marketing blog. Just this week he has bought back into Mumbrella in partnership with Business publishing company Intermedia.

Vivienne Kelly has experience across radio, entertainment business reporting and communications.

She is no stranger to radio and podcasting, having presented the Radio Today podcast during 2020 and 2021 and the Mumbrella podcast with Tim.  She is currently a Senior Communications Specialist with PR company Sound Story and previously worked at Rolling Stone, The Brag Media, Variety Australia and The Music Network.
