NIRS plans to broadcast AFL for 2023 are in doubt

The National Indigenous Radio Service broadcasts of AFL matches into remote Indigenous communities around the country, are in doubt due to a lack of funding.

The station is made up of almost entirely Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander commentators, and according to the Herald Sun, the station, may not go to air this season due to a lack of sponsorship and funding.

The station has been operating for 25 years and has hosted talent such as Gilbert McAdam, Andrew Krakouer, Nathan Lovett-Murray and Peter Keenan.

According to the Herald Sun, as late as Tuesday evening, the AFL said they were still expecting the station to be calling Thursday’s Richmond v Carlton clash, and claimed to be finalising funding for the station at the 11th-hour.
