Nominations now open for the NFSA’s 2025 Sounds of Australia

It is 10 years this November since Michelle Payne became the first, and only, female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup on 100/1 outsider Prince of Penzance. That win, and her notable speech immediately afterwards, is now eligible for entry into the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA)‘s Sounds of Australia, celebrating the audio moments that have defined, disrupted, or delighted our nation.

Public nominations are now open for the 2025 Sounds of Australia. You can put forward any Australian sound recording – music, podcasts, nature sounds, memorable moments in sport, politics, or pop culture, just as long as it’s over ten years old.

Sounds of Australia selected in 2024 included:

  • The earliest 2EA (now SBS Audio) broadcast recordings in language from 1975 with SBS having turned 50 this year
  • The Doctor Who theme song – written by Australian Ron Grainer
  • Nova Peris’ inaugural speech to Australian Parliament in 2013
  • Victoria Bitter’s iconic ‘Big cold beer’ ad from 1968

Each nomination helps preserve what matters and what resonates. Submissions close June 30. The final selections will be announced in late 2025.
