Community broadcaster Nu Country FM was featured in an ABC TV documentary this week in the ‘Reality Bites’ series.
The show featured international and national country stars and attracted good publicity for the station.
Nu Country member Nick Brenner spent three years working on the documentary – the saga of the volunteers who banded together to fight for a broadcasting licence. His 1,000 plus hours of filming was edited to 26 minutes and features Texan crime novelist Kinky Friedman, Billy Joe Shaver, Lee Kernaghan and cartoonist Fred Negro who designed the station’s guitar playing dingo logo.
Friedman and touring partner Little Jewford saved the station when they volunteered their services at a benefit concert on August, 26. 2000, after the Northcote studios burned down.
