Picnic’s over for Teddy Bear Fence

It was an idea hatched two years ago by HIT107 Adelaide presenter, Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello and his two young daughters as they travelled along the Copper Coast Highway, at the top of SA’s Yorke Peninsula.

The result is a kilometre stretch of road between Kulpara and Paskeville lined with some 2,000 teddy bears and other soft toys.

The feature, known as The Teddy Bear Fence, has become a unique tourist attraction, particularly for parents with young children, many of them stopping to contribute their own teddies to the fence. It is said longest fence of its kind anywhere in the world and is even signposted on Google Maps.

But now it seems the picnic may be over for the teddy bears as the fence has come under fire from local councillors who Cosi describes as “A group of “whingers and whiners. We get hundreds and messages about how much people love the fence, but it’s the classic bloody thing of the whining minority having the power.”

The council, along with road safety authorities, are concerned that the fence could be a fatal distraction for drivers who travel at the speed limit of 100kph. Cosi concedes there is a risk

It’s not all over yet, though, as there is much good will in the community towards the Teddy Bear Fence and stakeholders are eager to find a solution.

Maybe, the answer is to rezone the area as a permanent roadworks section and lower the speed limit to 40.
