Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa have been given the ultimate surprise, with their names bestowed upon two of Sydney Zoo’s brand-new baby quokkas.
Usually only found on WA’s Rottnest Island, the very cute native Australian critters have become a popular presence on social media lately, thanks to selfies with the stars.
Now, for the very first-time, they’ll be at Sydney Zoo – just in time for the school holidays.
Fitzy and Wippa were delivered the happy news live on-air during the week, before crossing to Natasha from Sydney Zoo on FaceTime, live from the quokka enclosure.
The surprises kept coming as the boys quickly found out that their namesakes are not the same gender – one is female and the other, male.
So, in order to determine which quokka would be named after who, their personalities were studied to figure out the best match.
Naturally, the hairier, chubbier and louder male quokka ended up with the name Wippa, whilst the female was named after Fitzy.
Wippa described the occasion as “an absolute honour”, while Fitzy’s biggest concern was whether the two would ever mate.
Natasha revealed they would, as they’re part of the zoo’s breeding program.
“Fitzy & Wippa could have babies”, Wippa laughed as Fitzy declared “I don’t want to be the female anymore!’”
