This year marks a milestone for local radio station 5RM, as it celebrates 90 years of broadcasting across the Riverland, Mallee and beyond.
To honour this achievement, a special community event will be held on Saturday, October 4th at the Berri Hotel — and everyone is invited to to share in the milestone and memories of the station.
The evening will be a celebration of the voices, stories, and songs that have shaped 5RM since its very first broadcast on the 30th of September 1935.
The station would love to hear from those who have contributed to the 90 years of success, from on-air talent to behind-the-scenes legends, loyal listeners to special guests. This is a night to reflect on 5RM’s rich history and radio’s bright future.
More details about the event will be shared in the coming weeks.
As part of the celebration, 5RM is calling on the community to help bring the station’s story to life.
Do you have any 5RM memorabilia or merchandise tucked away at home? Old station merch, photos, newspaper clippings, or even memories you’d like to share — the 5RM team would love to hear from you.
Selected items may be displayed on the night as part of a special showcase.
If you’d like to contribute in anyway or simply be kept in the loop as more details unfold, call 5RM on (08) 8582 1800 or email: [email protected]
Or follow along for updates on air at 5RM 801AM, 91.5FM, or the station’s Facebook page.
5RM Renmark began broadcasting in 1935, initially as part of the 5KA network. Throughout its history, 5RM has played a significant role in the local community, offering a mix of news, entertainment, and music tailored to its audience. In the 1930s and 1940s, the station gained attention for its innovative broadcasts, such as live descriptions of local events and special aerial pageants, reflecting the pioneering spirit of Australian radio during that era.
It was one of the last stations to play transcription records and was recognized for its local talent programs and community engagement, such as the popular “Radio Canteen” in the 1950sIn November 2021, 5RM entered a new chapter when it was acquired by the Australian Radio Network (ARN) as part of their purchase of Grant Broadcasters’ regional stations. This acquisition allowed 5RM to access ARN’s iHeartRadio platform, expanding its digital reach while retaining its local identity.
