smooth radio has plenty to celebrate this Sunday as it turns 5

In 2012, when NovaEnt content supremo Paul Jackson approached seasoned presenter and PD Mike Perso to do breakfast in Melbourne on 91.5 it wasn’t even called smooth.

The station that began as Vega, then Classic Rock and at times just plain 91.5 was consistently rating in the 3s.

Perso, who had already been one of a bevy of discarded talent in the ongoing shuffle to find some spark, says he wasn’t jumping on any bandwagon. Rather, he took the job because he felt Jackson was “switched on with a pretty good background” and hence had the potential to,  “add something richer to the Australian radio landscape”

Now as smooth is about to celebrate its 5th Birthday this Sunday, the brand, having tripled its audience, is number one FM in both Sydney and Melbourne.

Later this week radioinfo will bring you one on one interviews from Peter Saxon and Kim Napier with Melbourne’s Mike Perso, Sydney Breakfast duo Bogart Torelli and Glenn Daniel and Program Director for both 91.5 and 95.3, Georgie Page.
