Sonshine celebrates 25 years on air

98five Sonshine FM is celebrating 25 years on air with a week of events.

The station started broadcasting in 1988 from a small studio in Morley with only 10 staff and 4 announcers. Back in those early days, the station would end their broadast at midnight and play the national anthem.

Morning Café host Rodney Olsen said: “Staff were given an allowance rather than a wage and we relied heavily on volunteers and listener support. Without them we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

The 98five team has so far celebrated the significant milestone by emptying out their music library and filling the foyer with vintage records and CDs for listeners to buy. The team will also be broadcasting live from the foyer of their studios on Friday, September 20 and providing a free sausage sizzle breakfast for listeners.

Some of the guests this week have included some former announcers, and surprise interviews with The Wiggles and the Australian team down at Casey Station in Antarctica.
