The retirement of the beloved travelator outside Woolworths and Boost Juice in the Townsville Shopping Centre was apparently a truly emotional affair. It was considered more than a moving walkway. It was a mechanical masterpiece that carried Townsvillians the equivalent of more than eight laps around the globe. As one local said:

‘In this town, we don’t walk we travelate.’

To honour its profound legacy, STAR 106.3’s Archie & Donny wrote the late travelator a eulogy. Not long after, Townsville Shopping Centre manager Kelly Taylor-Smith reached out, offering “the opportunity of a lifetime”. Archie & Donny would get to officially host the grand re-opening of a brand-new travelator, and name it! Remarkably Kelly and Townsville Shopping Centre have agreed that whatever the public select will stick. Meaning whatever is decided is final for at least the next 40 years before the travelator needs another replacement.

Donny said:

“We’ve been absolutely buried. Texts, emails, carrier pigeons people are sending in everything from Terry, to Charles, to Travel-Swift, to The Travelnator. There’s no bad ideas. Actually, there are some shockers, but we’re reading them all.”
