The third Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) broadcast of the year AFTRS FM – That’s news to me! is here bringing daily news updates alongside a deep dive into ten topics that will resonate with listeners, from film and music to self improvement, mid-career pivots, what happens after dark and all that embodies intoxication.
The broadcast, released daily at 4pm, commenced Monday September 1, with the first episode an examination of the many faces of film culture. AFTRS Cinematography professor Simeon Bryan was introduced to the magical world of vertical soap operas.
Simeon’s thoughts:
“It’s kind of like a drama colouring in book, in terms of its level of sophistication.”
Discipline Lead – Radio & Podcasting, Andrea Ho said:
“The students have put a lot of time into longer written work with a daily half hour factual podcast including news headlines, and thinking about the way in which such content has moved into the podcast space.
It scales up their short form skills, speed and capability, and encourages them to be consistently creative.
Today for example Kwami Slusher explores what is meant by classical music and why it is enticing more Gen Z listeners, Cate McKenzie tackles how AI can change the meaning of songs and Lachlan A’Court starts a healthy debate about what’s the coolest instrument.”
The banjo. There’s my vote.
The ten students are working in two teams across the two weeks with a Best of the Week on a Saturday morning. Today theme is music, but you can catch up on all the topics and episodes as they are released, or afterwards, on Spotify or Amazon. Bite sized stories can be found on the AFTRS FM website. The broadcast wraps up on Saturday September 13.
