The final siren for Coodabeen Champions’ 43 year run on radio

After four decades, thousands of Champs‘ songs, two Grand Final performances and still no premiership for St Kilda, the Coodabeen Champions, Australia’s longest running weekly radio program, have unexpectedly quietly called it a day.

The Coodabeens’ members across the decades, Jeff Richardson, Greg Champion, Jeff ‘Torch’ McGee, Billy Baxter, Simon Whelan, Ian Cover, Andy Bellairs and Tony Leonard, started on community radio station 3RRR in the early 80s before moving to ABC Melbourne, then 3AW, back to Aunty and finally to the Ace Radio Network and 3MP in 2022 where they broadcast Fridays from 4-6pm

They’ll still be performing and have hinted at other things but this news two weeks shy of the commencement of AFL season 2024 would also suggest that they may not be continuing the podcast.

I’ll leave you with their song set at the 1987 VFL Grand Final. Meatloaf eat your heart out.
