It’s been a dramatic – if nerve-wracking – few weeks for the 91.1 Hot FM crew on Queensland’s Sunny Coast – and all due to a spat over a spicy condiment.
A few weeks ago, Hot FM brekky duo Sam and Ash were threatened with legal action for not delivering a promised bottle of hot sauce.
For the past eight years, whenever the station’s prize cupboard has been bare, listeners have instead been awarded a bottle of hot sauce.
“It was a schtick within the show that the audience were aware of,” Hot FM Content Director Hale Speedy explains. “The hot sauce didn’t exist.”
Three weeks ago, the ARN station received a message to its Instagram account from Brian (name changed), a previous winner of the fictitious hot sauce.
“He sent a very colourful voice note – most of which we couldn’t air – demanding his hot sauce,” says Hale.
Sam and Ash played a smidge of the audio on air, which wound Brian up so much he sent a letter from his lawyer stating that they were obligated to give him hot sauce or he’d be pursuing legal action.
The station quickly launched a search to find someone to make the sauce.
Local restaurateur Tony Kelly came to the rescue, and listeners were then asked for their input to help create the perfect sauce.
Now, in a story arc consisting of lawyers, G-wagons, helicopters, planes and their very own taxi, the first ever 91.1 Hot FM Sam and Ash Hot Sauce has finally been produced and distributed – complete with a rather elaborate method of delivery.
Naturally, the first bottle went to Brian, but more hot sauce will be given away to Hot FM listeners all this week.
