triple j’s Hottest 100 voting is open + Dr Karl does a shoey for science

The time has come to agonise over your fave songs of the year, as voting is now open for triple j’s Hottest 100.

Every year hundreds of thousands of listeners from all over the world vote on which songs they think make the cut, culminating in a list of the 100 biggest songs of the year.

The chosen songs which make up the list mark a distinct moment in time, such as The Rubens ‘Hoops’ (2015), Chet Faker‘s ‘Talk Is Cheap’ (2014) and Vance Joy‘s ‘Riptide’ (2013) which all topped the poll in recent years.

In 2016 triple j’s Hottest 100 has become such a force of nature that Australia’s leading scientist Dr Karl has made a documentary exploring the power of the music, in which he does a shoey for science with the help of 50 of the year’s biggest acts, including AlldayArt vs ScienceBall Park MusicBec SandridgeClient LiaisonDMA’SDustin TebbuttFlumeGang of YouthsGeorge MapleGordiGrouploveHellionsHermitudeHockey DadIllyJapanese WallpaperJess KentJulia JacklinJagwa MaJust A GentKingswoodKLPKučkaKurenL-FRESH the LIONLittle MayLuke MillionMacklemore & Ryan Lewis,  MontaigneMotezNgaiireNicole MillarPeking DukSAFIASpit SyndicateThe Delta RiggsThe PreaturesThe RubensThe Temper TrapThundamentalsTigertownTired LionTkay MaidzaTrophy EyesUrthboyVera BlueViolent Soho and What So Not

Be part of closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous students.

triple j is also proud to once again team up with AIME, the fantastic mentoring program supporting Indigenous kids through high school and into university, training and employment at the same rate as every Australian child.

Incredibly, triple j listeners raised over $100,000 for AIME throughout the last Hottest 100, benefiting 6000 kids in 2016, up from 4500 the year prior.

The funds raised from this year’s donations will go towards helping 10,000 Indigenous kids by 2018. To get involved, you’ll have the option to donate to AIME after you vote or simply donate now.

You can also show support by wearing an exclusive AIME x triple j 2016 Hottest 100 tee.

Designed by 16-year-old Indigenous artist Kaylem Macdonald, an AIME mentee from the Kamilaroi / Gamilaroi nation, the tee is emblazoned with a turtle and snake, symbolising peace between different kinds.

Speaking about the partnership, Jack Manning Bancroft, AIME founder and CEO, says “Rarely you get a chance in your life to make something big happen, now with triple j and the generosity of their listeners, we have that chance. Through the Hottest 100 we’ve already been able to support an extra 1500 students, and with your help we can give every kid in Australia that chance. We are on the crest of a wave changing the whole country, helping a generation of Indigenous kids rise up. Let’s get it done.”

Ollie Wards, triple j Content Director, adds “Last year, we were so stoked with triple j listeners raising a big six figure sum to support Indigenous students that we had to do it again! The Hottest 100 is something millions of Australians engage with every year, so through our AIME partnership we’re looking forward to not only raising much needed funds, but also to continue building a meaningful connection with Indigenous Australia.”

Now’s your chance to have your say, donate to AIME and then join us on Thurs 26 Jan as we count down your fave 100 songs of 2016.

triple j will continue to talk to Indigenous organisations, artists and our audience about the Hottest 100 date in future years. More info here
