Triple M Sydney’s Grill Team celebrates 1000th show

Emotions ran high in the studio this morning as Triple M’s Grill Team with Matty Johns, Mark Geyer and Gus Worland relived the past five years and celebrated their 1000th show.

They were joined by surprise guests Hugh Jackman, Andrew Denton and Boof Lehmann, with messages of congrats from Wil Anderson, Dave Hughes, Karl Stefanovic and Jarryd Hayne.

The boys also recapped some of the most memorable moments of their time in the breakfast slot, including raising close to $500,000 for Queensland flood victims with Legends of Origin, and when the show dropped a perfectly good Harley Davidson from a 50m crane.

One truly unforgettable moment was that of Kristian Anderson, who contacted the show in 2010 to see if Gus’ best mate Hugh Jackman could appear in a video celebrating the love and devotion of his dear wife, Rachel, who tirelessly supported him through his cancer treatment.

Hugh, like The Grill Team, was deeply moved by Kristian’s heartfelt video, which struck a chord around the world – including the Oprah Winfrey show which featured the video. Unfortunately, Kristian lost his battle with cancer, however not before he imparted his important message of men’s health through the Grill Team.

Since their first day on air, August 17th 2009, The Grillers have had an epic journey and drummed up loads of incredible stats along the way, including having created 3000 hours of live radio, interviewed 4000 guests and talked to 12,000 callers.

The show has also more than doubled its share with males under 50 from 6.8% when it began (Survey 6, 2009) to 16.2% today (Survey 3, 2014). The Grill Team is now the dominant radio show for Sydney males.
