Key to the establishment of 92.1 RTRFM in Western Australia and a co-founder of the long running Sunday Morning Coming Down program, Jerry Packington died peacefully in his music room, listening to his beloved program.
Jerry was part of a group instrumental in the origins of 6UWA, which later became 6UVS. When the University of Western Australia went to hand in their community broadcasting licence, Jerry help describe to the university what the station could become if it expanded its vision.
6UVS became RTRFM and a not-for-profit in 1991, following protests at UWA when they took 6UVS off the air.
His show The Medieval Cowboy broadcast on 6UWA’s first day of operation, April 1, 1977. Jerry briefly served on the station’s Board in those early days all this while serving in the Crown Solicitor’s Office. He was later appointed as a Magistrate.
IN 1982 he co-founded Sunday Morning Coming Down which does indeed air Sunday mornings from 9am till midday. In an interview with the station (see above), Jerry said:
“I’ve gained half a lifetime of enjoyment and enrichment of one of my main loves in life.”
