Vale Jill Emberson

ABC broadcaster and ovarian cancer advocate Jill Emberson has died at the age of 60.

The voice of ABC Newcastle Mornings for seven years, Jill was diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer in 2016.

When she got the news, she said she just wanted to curl up and disappear, but instead of disappearing, Jill decided that she could become the voice and advocate for those women who were receiving the same devastating diagnosis.

Emberson’s career in radio began in the Sydney newsroom of the ABC, and included time at triple j, ABC TV science program, Quantum, a position in New Caledonia as the Women’s Communications Officer for the Pacific Women’s Resource Bureau, and positions with Greenpeace and General Electric.

Jill took up her position with ABC Newcastle in 2009 and in January 2019 she was recognised for her contribution to journalism and advocacy work, being named Newcastle’s Citizen of the Year.

The ABC paid tribute to Jill and her contribution to research on ovarian cancer on their web site with a story on The Jill Effect.

She is survived by her husband Ken Lambert and daughter Malia.
