Vale Joan Sharry

Former AFTRS stalwart Joan Sharry has passed away.

Friend and colleague Annette Nazarov broke the sad news to friends and former AFTRS students.

In recent years Annette met with Joan at least once a week and was a great source of strength and encouragement for her.

Joan was part of the original team when the “Radio Unit” put the R into what was then just AFTS (Australian Film and Television School) in the 1970s. Also with her, during Joan’s time, was one of radio’s gentlemen, the late Phil Charley.

She was to many of the students in those formative years of the fulltime course, a substitute mother for those who were at the course from interstate and regional areas.

To those who worked with her, she was a tower of strength. Nothing ever seemed to faze Joan.

Joan always had a smile and a cheerful comment.

She had a great passion for Radio going back to when she was the Breakfast announcer on 6KG in Kalgoorlie when she was just 16, in 1944.

David Rogerson writes: “I’m sure many people like Barry Keohane, Jason Morrison, Matt Whittemore,  Matthew Fulton, Glenn Daniel, Lucienne Joy, Phil McNab, Annie Fryatt, Mark Collier, Steve Ahern, Byron Webb, Clinton Maynard and Barbara Heffernan and many, many more AFTRS alumni will be saddened by the loss of Joan.”
