Alexander ‘Lex’ Marinos OAM died on Friday September 13 after a two decade battle with leukemia. His family said in a Facebook post: “He died at home, at a moment of his choosing, surrounded by family and the sounds of Bob Dylan accompanying our vigil.”
Perhaps best known for his role as Bruno Bertolucci in Kingswood Country, the Wagga Wagga boy of Greek heritage had a fifty year career across all sectors of Australian media, as an actor, writer, TV director and in radio, and was awarded an Order of Australia medal in 1994 for his contribution to the performing arts.
Lex’s work in radio started at 2JJ, alongside Ted Robinson, and continued with the ABC as a news, talk and sports presenter, his love of rugby league and pride in his heritage evident when he delivered the Tom Brock Lecture in 2008.
He held advisory and governance positions with arts and cultural organisations including the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF). Lex would also pop up as a trainer with the Community Media Training Organisation (CMTO). His Blood and Circuses: an irresponsible memoir was published by Allen & Unwin and his home town will hold an exhibition celebrating his life later this year called: The Lex Factor: From Wagga to the World Stage.
Lex is survived by his wife Anne, his children, and more beloved grandchildren than he could count.
