Victoria’s stricter lockdown measures influence a massive increase in podcast listening, up 25%

ARN’s iHeartPodcast Network, has released new listener data for August from leading podcast technology provider Megaphone.

The data shows podcast listening in all states increased in August with Victoria’s stricter lockdown measures put in place in June influencing a massive increase in podcast listening – up 25% in August compared to the start of June.

The data also shows record high listening across Business & Finance, Comedy, News, Sports, and Catch Up Radio categories.

During August, based on an analysis of 900k+ Australian devices, listening across Business & Finance has tripled since March reflecting growing interest in the genre.

ARN’s Head of Commercial Audio & Podcasts Corey Layton said, “Once again our podcast data shows the important role audio plays in our audience’s daily lives. It’s no surprise that audio listening in Melbourne is up 25% since June as audiences turn to audio for information, a sense of connection and entertainment during lockdown.

“Since March we have seen steady growth across a number of categories with Business & Finance now three times more popular than it was in February as audiences turn to podcasts to better understand and adapt to the economic opportunities and challenges they face.”

Today’s data follows yesterday’s release of the Australian Podcast Ranker August results which shows ARN’s iHeartPodcast Network’s Stuff You Should Know  is again the #1 most popular podcast in Australia and the Network’s Casefile has held on to the #2 spot overall.

Kyle & Jackie O’s catch up podcast continues to be Australia’s favourite radio show podcast.

ARN’s data also shows listening increased in August across News (up 7%), Sports (up 21%), Catch Up Radio (up 31%) and Comedy (up 14%) categories.
