Will 2XL reintroduce its weekly Yodeling Session?

Probably not. But Yodeling was a big hit on 2XL Cooma back in 1947. That’s just one historic gem unearthed by The Radio Heritage Foundation through its popular series Australian Heritage AM Radio at www.radioheritage.com. Other stations featured this month include 4GY Gympie and 2WL Wollongong.

The features take a nostalgic look back 65 years to the mid-1940s and the personalities, programs and station profiles of Australian Heritage AM Radio across the country before TV and FM arrived on the scene.

Slightly quaint and quirky for today’s reader, the first series has already reached 50 features of individual stations giving a wonderful insight into how radio entertained and informed Australians of the age.

The latest features cover two original country radio stations 2XL Cooma and 4GY Gympie, as well as 2WL Wollongong.

Old station letterheads and photos have been found to illustrate the features along with original station logos and station advertising.

2XL Cooma ‘Centre of Monaro’ broadcast for 8 hours daily with special sessions for local towns such as Bombala and Adaminaby. It’s biggest claim to fame was the Thursday night Yodelling Session with regular listeners from New Zealand and many letters each week from Tasmanian fans.

2WL had the scintillating slogan ‘You’ll Do Well on 2WL’

4GY was officially opened on November 3, 1941, just three weeks before the outbreak of War in the Pacific.
