Australian podcast bi-annual report shows listening up 9% on last year, new listeners likely to be 18-34

The first Commercial Radio & Audio (CRA) and Triton Digital Australian Podcast Bi-Annual Report has shown that podcast popularity continues unabated, with average monthly listeners up near 9% in the first half of 2024, compared to last year, new podcast listeners are more likely to be people aged 18-34 and they are becoming part of a daily routine.

Rather than a commute or downtime activity, this new report shows podcasts are becoming an integral part of daily routine, with Thursday the peak day for listening. This shift will be driven by the integration of podcasts with mobile devices, which are now the preferred platform on-the-go.

CRA chief executive officer Lizzie Young said:

“For Australians navigating a fast-paced lifestyle podcasts deliver unparalleled convenience with on-demand, personalised content that’s ready anytime and anywhere.”

Society and Culture, True crime, and News continue to be the most popular genres, with health and fitness, education and family-friendly content gaining ground. Using Triton Digital’s Demo+ Podcast Audience Profiles, which they launched into Australia last year, men were more inclined to listen to Comedy and Sports and women to True Crime, Society and Culture, Health and Fitness, Education and Kids/Family. There’s been an increase in listening particularly men aged 25-54 and with 18-34 the most likely to check out and listen to new podcast.
