Hamish and Andy No 1, ABC debuts: Australian Podcast Ranker

The November Triton Australian Podcast Ranker looks different this month extending to a top 200 and with the two debuts in the top ten as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) joins the ranker for the first time. The top four is the same with Hamish and Andy at No. 1. No 5 is the debut of Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski‘s long running ABC interview program Conversations, which was also recently No 1 on Apple‘s list of most popular podcasts in Australia.

LiSTNR‘s The Hamish and Andy podcast again had over a million listeners this month, a milestone figure that they have achieved three times this year and a record 23rd time they’ve held top spot. LiSTNR had 68 other podcasts in the top 200, more than any other network.

SCA Executive Head LiSTNR Podcasts, Grant Tothill, said:

“As the ABC joins the Podcast Ranker for the first time, it’s great to see LiSTNR maintain its publisher position and remain Australia’s biggest podcast Sales Representatives Network. Hamish & Andy being number one again is a remarkable and unrivalled feat, as LiSTNR also releases the fifth season of Hamish & Andy’s Remembering Project

It has been a strong year for the LiSTNR team with success in publishing new formats and titles to attract new audiences and offer advertisers more opportunity to reach them.”

Tothill is right that the ABC will bring a lot more competition to the ranker. While Hamish and Andy had more than 2 million downloads in November, Conversations had 5,489, 175. ABC News Daily also debuted in the top 10, at 9, with 16 ABC podcasts debuting in the top 100.

The ABC is the number 3 Australian podcast publisher, the first time the national broadcaster has participated in the ranking.

The ABC has the most titles featured in this month’s list with 33 titles in the top 200 ranked Australian podcasts ranging from news and information, entertainment and sport.

Conversations with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski is the ABC’s highest ranking podcast landing in 5th spot. ABC News Daily presented by Samantha Hawley was the highest ranked news and current affairs podcast landing in 9th spot pulling 385,000 listeners.

ABC Head of Audio Ben Latimer said: “This is an incredible result for the ABC in our first ranking. It’s exciting to see the range of titles that have performed well from across our podcast slate. The ABC is proud to offer such an incredible range of quality podcasts, always free and on demand.”

The ABC has 28 million monthly downloads, followed by ARN with 18 million and SCA with 10 million.

Ford Ennals, CRA CEO, welcomed the ABC to the ranker saying:

“ABC is a prolific podcast producer, and it is a boost for the industry to have them participate in the Australian Podcast Ranker. It’s very encouraging to see the sustained popularity of podcast listening and very pleasing that 18 out of the top 20 most popular podcasts in Australia are commercial titles.”

As a result of the new addition a record 105.2 million podcasts were downloaded last month. Annual insights show 946 million podcasts were downloaded in 2023, a 25% increase from 2022. and meaning we are looking at a billion downloads by the end of the year, which will also be a record.

“Overall, it has been an incredible year for podcasts – a 25% increase in downloads for 2023 is huge, and driven by the array of high-quality Australian content,” Mr Ennals said.

Hamish and Andy were top of the ranker, number 2 was Casefile True Crime, Shameless at No. 3, Mamamia Out Loud at 4, Conversations at number 5 and  Kyle and Jackie O 6th. The top ten are all Australian podcasts.
