Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff has joined the Hit Network’s top rating Dan & Christie Breakfast show to discuss his government’s landmark decision to end state funding for greyhound racing.
The Premier said the move is about supporting animal welfare and meeting community expectations.
He personally phoned Christie Hayes – who is an ambassador for The Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds – to share the news before coming into the studio.
He recounted calling other key advocates over the weekend, and the emotional reactions from those who have fought for the change.
Christie is among several prominent Tasmanians who’ve been lending their voices to the ongoing movement to end greyhound racing in Tasmania – attending events for the movement and using her platform on social media and radio to advocate for change.
Christie called the decision “a pivotal moment in Australian history” and praised the Premier for being “on the right side of history” and “giving a voice to beautiful animals that don’t have one.”

Premier Rockliff: “Because of your passion – and many others – over a long time in banning greyhound racing in Tasmania, we’ve made the decision over the weekend. We are phasing it out in a sensible and measured way to support animal welfare. It’s time to draw a line in the sand; this does not meet community expectations.”
Christie: “It’s the right thing to do. People have been advocating for this – particularly people like [Greyhound Rehabilitation Enthusiasts Association Tasmania Founder] Rosie Saville and [journalist and advocate] Deb Fleming.”
Premier Rockliff: “I rang Rosie on Sunday, and she was sobbing with glee. To hear the emotion in her voice – because she’s so passionate about it – it’s wonderful because people can see that their advocacy and their passion can make a difference.”
“There are a few people that are very disappointed, and we recognise that.”
Listen to Dan & Christie across Tasmania and Regional Victoria on the Hit Network from 6-9am weekdays, also on LiSTNR.
