After ABC Sport presenter Andrew Moore send his colleagues a text message from hospital after his surgery post heart attack about missing the footy, I don’t think any of us realised just how very close we came to losing him.
Andrew shared on air today that on Wednesday August 13 after waking with chest pains it took a lot before he finally got his wife Janyne to call an ambulance.
At Westmead Hospital Andrew was diagnosed with a heart attack and underwent an initial three-hour surgery to place stents. During the next three weeks in hospital, Moore had four further operations and five days in intensive care. Then there were four near death experiences, one in which he awoke to chest compressions and CPR. He was told later that he had just a 20% chance of survival.
Andrew is now home and feeling “weak, but I don’t feel crook.” It’s unlikely he’ll be back on air calling the footy before 2026.
But the time has had a different healing too. Andrew reconnected with his brother and had a first face-to-face meeting in over a decade. His daughter Eliza on his return home on Friday decorated the house with with balloons and banners for Father’s Day. Now to rest, recovery and a health overhaul. So glad to still have you with us Andrew.
