A true voice of aviation: Vale Geoffrey Thomas

Geoffrey Thomas – a man considered one of the world’s most respected aviation journalists – has died at the age of 74.

Surrounded by loved ones, the award-winning journalist and author passed away in Perth on Tuesday, following a short illness.

Over five decades, Thomas was renowned for his insightful and fearless reporting on the aviation industry, sharing his expertise with media organisations worldwide.

Radio colleague Scott Mayman was among the many to pay tribute.

“I was heartbroken to hear about the passing of Geoffrey. We first met around 2006 or so when I was a presenter at ABC Radio. We clicked with so much in common and our interview discussions were a breeze.”

“His unique delivery of information on aviation matters were popular across the media landscape.”

“Based in Perth, he was a gentleman with close ties to Canberra and the on-going processes involving the ATSB.”

“He most recently contributed to YouTube, just last week and was at the forefront at the latest investigation and search into MH370.”

A funeral for Geoffrey Thomas will be held on June 17 at Perth’s Karrakatta Cemetery.
