Eddie McGuire: “I’ve got to face up to it”

Eddie McGuire has offered to stand aside from his commitments on Triple M breakfast and as president of the Collingwood football club to show he is serious about making amends for his unintentional racist comments. AUDIO

On Triple M’s Hot Breakfast show this morning McGuire has told listeners he has to “face up” to his “inadvertent comments” and “get something good out of it.” Listeners emailing into the show were generally supportive of McGuire’s intention to correct his mistake, as this clip from this morning’s show indicates.

McGuire intends to ask Collingwood board members whether he should temporarily step down, and also says he would ”take a spell” from his various media commitments if required.

“If that’s symbolic, if that makes a difference, then I will do it,” he said in yesterday’s media conference (see our earlier story).

“I have no problem if Triple M said have a spell, if Fox Footy said you know what we don’t want you to be the face of footy this weekend, maybe have a spell. ‘I would happily do that and I’d cop that blemish on my impeccable record in that regard to make the point… I will make amends, I promise you I will make amends,” he said yesterday.

He also offered to resign from his position as chairman of the Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre, but the Centre rejected the need for him to resign.
