Being a young person and working in radio, I personally believe the young people don't listen purely because of their music mix. It isn't what young people listen to. It seems since Nova came along, Triple J decided to go full on alternative. All well and good for people who like alternative music, but its a minority of people. I personally think the commercial stations do alot more homework when it comes to reaching the youth market. Another point to think about is that they've lost all their best talent since the late 90's, in the Days of Mikey Robbins & Helen Razer. Right now, I don't think theres many people working there with a commercial radio background. Another point to think about...
Hmm.. *deep thought*.. every station has its ups and downs. At this present time JJJ is having a downer. Hopefully it will pick up extremely soon.
MAYBE JJJ should reinvent itself a TINY bit... but stay with the NO ADS approach. That is still one of the main reasons my friends and myself still listen.

Someone obviously hates JJJ. I wonder because they aren't in the demographic age market JJJ aim at... Grow up.
JJJ has always been a waste of tax payers money. The days of being different to be cool are gone.Maybe they should relaunch as a radio station playing only 70s and 80s commerical music. No one in any market is doing this.They would have a niche and most importantly...listners! Only jjj could risk doing a 70s and 80s format.
Triple J IS new music. That's their premise and if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't hear half the stuff 6-12 months later on commercial radio branded as "new music". They do the job of PD for every other station - they take risks and go with gut instinct music-wise. Imagine what we'd hear 24-7 if it wasn't for the Js... manufactured pop and good time hits of the 70s and 80s. Not that that's all bad, but JJJ provide freshness. Stay true JJJ!
70's and 80's under JJJ? No way!.. WS FM people! That's for 70's and 80's.. even 2DAY as well. Occasionally MIX too. JJJ is youth oriented.. and basically play music which doesn't get much commerical airplay. IE Independent labels that you find in Music stores like Red Eye Records in the City and not commercial like Sanity. JJJ - stay the way you are. You out do the rest easily.
Many messages are overlooking a major point:
Triple J services rural and regional Australia terrificly.
No station has achieved as much as Triple J: and no station is ripped off as much as Triple J. Commercial Radio takes the good stuff from Triple J and makes it commercial: how many beat the drum competitions have you seen on commercial stations? or how many unearthed bands now make it onto commercial playlists.
Triple J's commitment to
- youth focussed A Current Affairs/News/Issues
- live music
- rural and regional Australia
- new bands
- and providing an alternative
should be commended by all.
Certainly Triple J is lacking the on-air talent of the 90's - Mikey, Helen Razar, Sandman, Paul McDermott, Adam Spencer in Drive, Tunny. But the new batch has its own highlights
- Adam Spencer and Will Anderson have a tight breakfast show
- Roy and HG
There are problems namely drive, afternoons and Super Request. But it's not a bad line up - I just wish that they would give me a job.
I would like to say,
If JJJ charter is to push new music and new music forms, i would like to ask what the hell happened to RnB etc styles of music. The people at Triple J failed to move on with what they set out to do. Thats why nobody listens. They have become another waste of the spectrum....unless they can reinvent and do what they should be doing.
How many of the people commenting about TRIPLE J are actually teenagers ?
TRIPLE J's charter is to cater for our youth, and they have FAILED at that spectacularly.
The "youth" network has been on the nose for years and is now being flogged in thye 10 - 17 demographic by stations like 2 DAY, MMM, NOVA and sometines MIXFM!!
It's time for the station to stop carrying on like a station for inner city alternatate lifestylers..and become relevant to youths
Kids do *not* want to hear unfamiliar alternate music...as the ratings clearly show they want the big hits.
JJJ should return to a station that is more focused like it was when it first started as JJ. Good on the ABC for addressing the need for new acts even way back then. Today it is trying to be too many things for too many all at once. It constantly gets out rated in it's demo by the commercial station's in each market.
Other than that shut it down and give the frequencies out to community or commercial operators. Also can parlament radio to that's even a bigger waste of the ABC's budget!!!!!!
I'm 19, and I went through High School at a school where "if you didn't listen to JJJ you were a loser." But secretly, we all loved commercial radio. Better songs and more entertainment. I think the only reason to listen to Triple J is 'cos there is no ads!
Well, I just like to say I am 21. I am still considered as youth. I love JJJ. It depends on your tastes if you listen to it or not. I personally cannot stand R'n'B etc styles of music. JJJ is really the only station that allows unsigned and unknown bands to get some airplay, where it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack to get it played on other commercial stations unless you know someone in the industry.. (kind of. I am not saying that is what happens. Just using it as an example).
I actually take back my previous comment about slightly changing JJJ. Stay the way you are!
Just from a listener's point of view... if triple J was to reach a wider audience and increase ratings without completely losing its "alternative image", i think that the music director should add slightly more dance and r&b to its format (eg. 1 extra song an hour dance/urban). Not the exact stuff that commercial networks play, but other songs that that the 17-24 demographic like to listen to (there are heaps of good songs from Australian artists in these genres that could get more airtime). Dance and r&b is also what the youth and triple J listeners like to listen to, and by just tweaking the format slightly by adding a few more to its playlist i would be confident in saying that a lot more students and teenagers would listen to it and have a long-term loyalty to the station.
