And well done to Angela Catterns and Richard Glover. Job well done. You and your colleagues should be immensely proud. And well done to all the top 5 stations, to be within 1% point of each other makes it a very interesting and extremely unpredictable, competitive marketplace.
As for Sydney talk Breakfast in 2004, it will continue to even out - Carlton will lift some more, Catterns will settle back slightly and Jones will remain strong but not dominant. In Melbourne, you probably don't need crystal balls to know that 3AW will continue to wallop the opposition, although ABC 774 will bounce back a little. They're a resilient station. But what would I know.
I just wanted to give some kudos to a guy who has the most incredible talent and is somewhat wasted in the midnight to dawn hours. That bloke is Jim Ball, 2GB weekday overnights. Up and down the dial, especially on FM, you either find continuous music, a repeat of the day's playlist or BBC world service on a large number of stations. Incidentally, this comment is in no way intended to go against the views and ideas of John Kerr on 2UE overnights as he also does a sterling job, but for entertainment plus you just can't go past Jim Ball. Addicitive and very entertaining. Thanks Jim!
I would like to congratulate one of Melbourne's best (probably unknown by most) radio talents on his rise in rating on the departing 3AK. That man is Brett de Hoedt. It is sad if no one picks up this talented person!
Alot has been said and written about Angela Catterns' win in the final survey of this year, but for mine the real winner was Mike Carlton. In 6 weeks on breakfast, He has manged to lift fom 7.5%share to 9.9%,reversing 2UE's slide in the ratings since the departure of Alan Jones . The Carlton/Laws combination which proved to be successful back in the early 80'S, looks like putting 2UE back on top in the talk market next year.
Gold Coast results...Well what do you think, has hot tomato tasted the cold hard reality that it hasn't taken the Gold Coast by storm. Has Sea FM wondered why it's own result wasnt the greatest and Gold FM well they would be happy that people are listening...That seems to be the story that I have picked up...
Tell you what get Virgin into Brisbane and look out...It will hit the fan...not to many stations can say they have their own airline and recording label....
The funny part is virgin seem to be honest in their approach to Australia... so Australians have warmed to that.
The one to watch in 2004 will be Virgin and when the jobs come up people!!! we will all be wanting to jump ship...that's just how good it could be for them..I bet they know it too..
Seasons greetings and all the best for 2004 to all the great people I've worked with on & off-air over the past 32 years in Commercial radio. To those who weren't so great including the one's I've had to sack and those involved in my 2 dismissals at age 18 & 39....it sure as hell keeps life interesting ! With my "50th" coming up on January 12(along with Howard Stern) and Rush Limbaugh also celebrating on January 12, it would appear the ride in 2004 will be just as challenging, exciting and unpredictable, whether you're in the States, Down Under or Wherever in the world of Commercial Radio.
All the best. IAN WRIGHT, General Sales Manager, 5DN ADELAIDE.
