It's such a shame PDs have to take into account whether or not something is Australian, as opposed to whether or not it's a GOOD SONG. The minimum Australian content law has its virtues - helps great Aussie bands like Killing Heidi, The Whitlams, Machine Gun Fellatio get airplay as they're getting started... but too often ends up with lazy PDs chucking garbage like Leah Haywood and Bec Cartwright into rotation just to meet the quota.
It makes sense to "spend were you earn" and put back to the Australian Music Industry. I believe that the 25% should remain the very minimum, and that should be expanded on. Most stations have an "Oz Made" show, and this is a great way to help with the quota, and give new Aussie tallent a go. Each to their own, and artists like the ones mentioned below in a negative way are suited to different formats. Some listeners love those mentioned artists and hate the ones you mentioned were "good". I think if we want to sustain , and grow the Oz Music scene, we need to forge ahead with a solid push for Aussie artists.......oi oi oi!!
Austereo's new initiative is really nothing more than a repackaging of their current situation. Triple M in Sydney were running "Adopt an Aussie Artist" for a long time, which is essentially the same thing (commercial airtime, airplay, etc)
Austereo being the conservative monolith, it will be interesting to see if they actually break any new Aussie bands, or if sleepy Human Nature sound-alikes continue to proliferate.
More Aussie content surely would'nt be harmful to the Australian music industry and listeners in giving more awareness of our less known talent. Look at those countries with a thriving music industry. Their music stations have a high quota requirement for local music. Canada's airplay quota is 60% for local releases. Food for thought.
We already have a 30% at our station and that must include 10 % new stuff
gone are the days of the chisel, inxs, AC/DC, oils. need I go on !
oh by the way the CBAA are on to a good thing with the AMRAP Project
Australian???..... why don't you play unsigned aussie bands too.. (but alas that can turn into a different topic)...local especially.
25% content is not a lot to ask - 3 or 4 songs an hour? New Australian stuff can be where you strike trouble, sometimes you don't get hardly anything decent for a month, then booshka! 20 artists ready to go the next month. Good onya Austereo, just no more Popstars please!!!!!!!!
Should be at least 70%
Food for thought - what you could do.. it might take a bit of work to do but it might pay off -
You could have 1 hour of overseas, then 1 hour of aussie all the time.. or play, 1 aussie song, 1 overseas song, 1 aussie, 1 oversseas etc...
sounds stupid i know.. but just a random thought
The "American" influence on Australian radio is certainly not new. A lot of those radio dramas heard on Oz radio in the 40s and early 50s were Australian versions of American programs using American scripts. Even those DJs from the 50s and 60s in Australia were made to listen to imported air-check tapes from the US so that Oz DJs had the same cool-cat sound of Dick Clark and other big names from overseas. How would you like to be told to "copy this guy".
