I think its way to early to tell if it's going to be a major success.
From the 30mins or so I've heard of each program driving around Newcastle, both are quite strong, but what worries me is the Sydney-Melbourne thing and football codes. Perhaps they're going to have to pre-record some gags/comments about each code and insert them into the local windows... that might work. I'll be interested to see if they network the program to 4MMM in the future. You have to give Grant and the team kudos for trying. I just hope they stick with it and let it evolve without worrying too much too soon about ratings.
Geez...
That Grant Tothill missed his calling. He should be a politician. He
sidestepped or bullshitted his way through every question you put to him!
To get back the listeners to 2MMM is to play more Classic Rock, im a regular listener of " The Fox" www.thefox.com in Denver Colarado USA and "Rock 103" www.rock103.com in Memphis , both stations play Classic rock, the songs i grew up listening to.
Im 35 years of age and im not really into the new rock and telling by the stations recent ratings it is'nt doing real good.
The Buck lies with the Program and Music Directors of the station, Change the format to the classic rock format and watch the listeners return.
As far as the brekky shifts go, you don't need 3 to 4 presenters to do a brekky shift, im getting a little tired of " Ken & Barbie" brekky shows and they bore me to tears.
I think the best brekky shows were Doug Mulray on 2 MMM & Ian MacRae & Nick Jones on 2SM.
As a Brisbane resident i can't comment too much about Triple M in Sydney and in Melbourne, but the recent ratings for those two stations (8th and 5th respectively) suggest the format needs a bit of a shake up, especially when the new stations up for auction go to air in the next year or two. An idea for Grant to implement would be too cut out networking the breakfast shows, as it would take away from the live and local feel of the breakfast show, and without strong ratings in breakfast the station would most likely lose more loyal listeners. If i was Grant i would play Modern rock from the last 2-3 years and liven up the sound a little more. A great example of this is Auckland's 90.2 The Rock, which is fantastic rock station and there is no reason why Triple M couldn't become a great station and jump to no.1 or 2 in the ratings.
Firstly, I think obviously there are valid reasons for what the Triple M network are doing, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it.
However, from a Marketing perspective, I don't know that there are many schools of thought that would agree with the decisions made.
Networking a show between Sydney and Melbourne means they lose any locality whatsoever. Obviously the advantages of networking the show are that the talent pool is bigger, but I don't think there was any problem with the level of talent before.
Firstly, listeners in some ways would see the lack of local flavour as a disadvantage. It also opens up a weakness in the Triple M product for a competitor to take advantage of. At a time when the Triple M brand suffers from a poorer image than it has in the past, it's a risky time to be making changes that potentially weaken the product.
I also worry slightly about so many people (is it 7 or so??) presenting a breakfast show. I fear a couple of them won't be able to get a word in edgewise, and to the listener, it will just sound like a crowd of people, not a team.
I would like to hear Wazza the Rock Dog's opinion on this.
