ABC job cuts ‘to fund digital drive’

ABC managing director Mark Scott has admitted staff are losing their jobs so the public broadcaster can invest in new websites, apps and other digital services. In a Senate estimates hearing in Canberra yesterday, Mr Scott also claimed the “Hunger Games” redundancy process had “worked well” while “confronting” for staff. “We had identified 400 redundancies overall, 300 in the first tranche. The savings are going for a digital reinvestment fund and the other to meet the efficiency offsets identified by the government,” he said. “More than 100 staff have now exited the ABC and there will be more to come in the weeks ahead.” Mr Scott defended spending on consultants and rejected criticism by former ABC news director John Cameron, who said the 5 per cent federal government efficiency savings could have been found without mass redundancies and content changes.
