Australian community broadcasting boss seeking ‘increased government support’ as COVID-19 impacts ‘important service’

Among the services hardest hit in Australia during the coronavirus pandemic is community broadcasting, and with a large majority of radio stations run by volunteers and reliant on local business and public support, they’re hoping added government funding can assist during the COVID-19 crisis. "The impact of the pandemic has had multiple aspects for us," Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) CEO Jon Bisset told Nine.com.au. "A lot of stations with older volunteers, they’re in a significant at-risk group, so there’s a loss of volunteers or a need for those volunteers to operate remotely. The community radio sector also relies on sponsorship from small business and they’ve been hardest hit in this environment as well. It’s tough out there."
