Mate Baiting

The Sydney Morning Herald;s ‘Spike’ column reports: "Hell hath no fury like an old radio ham scorned. John Laws was interviewing the ever charming NRMA president, Ross Turnbull, about the state of the Pacific Highway on his show yesterday morning when the opportunity to have a go at rival Alan Jones arose. Turnbull was on air doing a bit of political name dropping, telling old Golden Tonsils he had met the Prime Minister about the state of the highway and had ‘put a very strong case to him and I must say we were pretty well received …’ Lawsy’s interest was sparked by the mention of John Howard. ‘You met with the Prime Minister?’ he asked Turnbull, who reiterated what he’d just told the talking Brillo Pad. ‘OK, so was Alan there,’ he shot back at Turnbull – a long time ‘mate’ of Lawsy’s bitter opponent and one of the people who flew to be by Jones’s side in 1988 when his rugger mate hit a spot of bother in London. ‘No. Come on, John. We’re mates,’ a defensive Turnbull responded. ‘Stop laughing, Ross,’ a now giggling Laws told Turnbull. ‘No, no. That’s not fair, John. You know Alan’s a good mate of mine.’
