In a small room in the prison’s education centre, 10 indigenous women gathered yesterday to record messages to family and friends and discuss the things affecting them on the inside – from Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s apology to the stolen generations (a good first step), to the food they miss (mum’s cooking). Organised by community radio station 3CR, the three-hour Beyond the Bars program gave the prisoners a voice during NAIDOC Week, which celebrates indigenous culture and its place in society, reports The Age.
