If we may paraphrase Churchill, never have so many fought so hard for so little. I refer to the ongoing stoush between the Australian radio industry and our record producers, who are at war over royalty payments for music played on internet-streamed simulcasts of radio broadcasts. At the moment the nation’s 200-odd regional radio stations are on the frontline but the battle may soon engulf metropolitan stations. The regional stations have suspended their streaming services rather than pay — wait for it — the grand sum of $325 a quarter in royalties.
