Sony and Warner Music are out of tune with internet radio listeners in the UK

Back on November 1st, 2019 a judge decided that although TuneIn isn’t a music streaming service and is storing or rebroadcasting the radio stations, it was enabling people in the UK to easily locate overseas radio stations and hear music that wasn’t licensed to be heard in the UK.

Of course, it wasn’t just Sony or Warner’s music that was being played, but that didn’t seem to matter. To comply with the judge’s ruling, TuneIn blocked access to all overseas radio stations.

I doubt very much that Sony or Warner’s coffers will be seriously harmed by a few people being able to listen to a foreign radio station in the “wrong country”. It seems rather a petty move and may also have implications for technology manufacturers, many of whom have built TuneIn into their streaming devices and wireless speakers.
