WHAT happens when a suspected Islamic terrorist takes hostages during the shift of a conservative Sydney radio broadcaster with big ratings, but enemies across mainstream media and smugly self-righteous Twitter? The answer played out over a marathon nine hours behind the microphone for Ray Hadley on Radio 2GB yesterday as he broke major stories, helped police, maintained balance, and rejected rants of anti-Muslim callers. Hadley doesn’t see himself as a journalist. But this was powerful — and potentially life-or-death — live journalism. It demanded delicate judgment under great pressure. A poor decision in a thrust for ratings could put people in danger.
