Use collective passion to make the ABC the best it can be: Michelle Guthrie

ABC Managing Director Michelle Guthrie today emailed staff with a set of Principles for how national broadcaster will conduct itself.

After consulting widely, Guthrie has a plan to "improve the way we do things at the ABC." She wrote:

"The noise in the external environment shouldn’t prevent us from pursuing this important work. Now more than ever we need to use our collective passion to make the ABC the best it can be – for you and for our audiences.

Changing media business models was the topic of a session at the Asia Media Summit in Delhi.

A panel of speakers looked at how business models are changing and how broadcasters can respond.


“The largest taxi company Uber, doesn’t have a fleet, the largest accommodation company AirBnB, doesn’t own any hotels. The largest news media company Facebook, doesn’t produce any content,” said David Hua from ABC Australia (pictured above).

ABC hit in Federal Budget

In this week's federal budget, the ABC came out worst off, with a freeze in its indexation funding amounting to a reduction of $84 million over three years.

The government says the reduction is aimed to ensure the national broadcaster "finds efficiencies." The ABC says there are no more efficiencies to find and that the cuts will mean job cuts.
