2GB sacks Michael Smith for calling Muhammad a paedophile

The outspoken announcer told, You can’t call a Deity a paedophile.

He was to fill in for Chris Smith’s Afternoon program while he went on holidays for three weeks from tomorrow. But, according to Smith’s website, on Friday, MRN and 2GB Program Director David Kidd called to tell him the deal was off, “We won’t be needing you. You can’t call a Deity a paedophile,” he said.

Ignoring the technicality that Muhammad was a prophet and not a God, Kidd was referring to what Smith had said in a discussion during his regular Thursday guest spot with Drive presenter, Ben Fordham.

Smith told Fordham’s listeners, The prophet Muhammad was a paedophile, a pederast, a sexual offender, a man who promoted the idea that it was OK to marry a six-year-old and consummate the marriage when the little girl was nine. And that’s written into their books, it’s part of the philosophy … the Koran.  It’s factually correct.”

In fact, following complaints to the ACMA in 2011 for similar comments Smith made on his Afternoon program on 2UE, he was exonerated and the complaints dismissed.

Nonetheless, on this occasion, 2GB fielded a number of angry complaints from listeners including one from a distraught caller who can be heard along with Michael Smith’s comments about Islam on the audio below which also appears on Smith’s website.

On Friday morning Ray Hadley opened his top rating 2GB show by slamming Smith’s comments, telling listeners, “I want to go on record today and completely distance myself from Mr Smith’s comments as well.  Yesterday I was insulted by what was said … and I’ve got to speak out against it.’’

However, Smith remains unrepentant, stating on his website, “I know Ray Hadley disagrees with me – perhaps Ray could let us know what part of a grown man having sex with a 9 year old girl is right?

“Ask Ray Hadley if it would be OK if it was Robert “Dolly” DUNN who said it was all right to have sex with children. Ask Ray Hadley if it would be OK to have sex with children because Dolly Dunn wrote about it.
I suspect Ray would say no – but then Dunn doesn’t have that many followers.”

Smith told Fairfax Media, he stands by his on-air words and the comments that followed on his website. He said he was unsure whether he had also now lost his guest slot on Fordham’s show in the future.
