2 SER’s Radiothon

2SER’s annual Radiothon will run from September 26 to October 3 this year. The station said it hopes to attract over 2000 new or renewing subscribers during the eight day membership drive.

2SER’s Managing Director, Philip Shine told radioinfo: “We know that 2SER offers a true alternative to Sydney radio listeners. Not only is 2SER independent, non-commercial and not government-funded; we provide access to alternative views, news, arts and culture, which wouldn’t otherwise get a hearing.

“2SER is one of the few stations in Sydney now which provides specialised programming.”

Part of Australia’s enormous community radio sector, 2SER has been part of the media landscape since 1 October, 1979. It was one of the first community radio stations established in Sydney.

It is one of approximately 250 community radio stations and another 80 stations operated by remote aboriginal communities.

CBAA President David Melzer says the community sector is “independent, diverse and local… compared with the heavily networked commercial and public radio sectors.”

“In terms of the community radio sector’s size, it’s interesting to relate it to ABC and commercial stations. There are about 250 commercial radio stations, extremely heavily networked and about 50 different ABC radio stations around the country, quite heavily networked. Less than 10% of the revenue raised by community broadcasters comes from the government,“ says Melzor.

The “Tr th We Need You” (ie – the letter U is missing) Radiothon will offer subscribers the chance to go into a draw for over $12,000 worth of prizes including a Home Theatre DVD system and a Mini Hi-Fi System from AIWA.

Other prizes include: packs of CDs from Creative Vibes and Inertia Distributors, cycling gear from Woolys Wheels, Yoga lessons and gear from Yoga Solutions, DVDs from Madman Entertainment, a Tivoli Audio Kloss Model One radio.

Business subscribers will be able to win a $2000 on-air promotion package from 2SER as well. Daily prizes from New Internationalist and Ministry magazines, Acetate Record Bar, Dendy Cinemas, Crumpler bags, Bondi Wheatgrass and the Bell Shakespeare Company.
