2005 European Radio Symposium: Warsaw

This year’s European Radio Symposium is being held in Warsaw on Wednesday 16 November. The topic is ‘The Digital Future’.

Radio is operating in a
world of rapidly changing and
developing technology. The oportunities to listen to radio in
different places and in different ways
are increasing.

The same radio station
may be be sourced from radio, digital
television or the internet, and there is also the opportunity
to record and play back programmes
at any time.

These technological changes also
mean the consumer’s radio experience
is transformed whilst massively increased
functionality provides new opportunities
to both marketers and their
agencies.

These developments present some
different and difficult problems for commercial
and public service broadcasters
alike, which will be discussed at the Symposium.

One result of the expanding number
of stations and platforms available is to tax diary (or recall) audience measurement
techniques still further.

There
is thus a demand for electronic measurement
and, so far, there are four
personal meter techniques on the market.
Two of these will be presented at
this conference for the first time.

RAJAR has conducted more independent
research on personal meters than
has been carried out in any country –
from laboratory tests, through validation
tests to field trials. The conference has a paper
from RAJAR to explain the philosophy
behind these big methodological
investigations and the kind of findings
obtained.

Other speakers include World DAB, Mindshare, TNS Media Research, Arbitron, and others.
