2Day offering assistance to rape victim. Kyle hits out at media coverage

Austereo’s Sydney General Manager
Jenny Parkes has made a statement about 2Day’s Lie Detector segment, saying Kyle and Jackie and 2DayFM were “saddened by the turn of events.”

The statement reads:

“In the normal course of preparing the segment all due care and consideration was given to the family and clearly we didn’t know anything about this traumatic incident.

“The moment we became aware of it was live on air and we brought it to an end as soon as we possibly could. As is only appropriate, we are offering all the assistance we can to the family, including counselling, in what is of course an extraordinarily difficult situation.”

On the 2Day website, Kyle and Jackie have addressed the incident, saying:

“We muck around a lot on the radio but off the air there are lots of different things we do with people. Contrary to popular belief, we both care a lot about people.

“As far an apology goes, the only person I feel sorry for is the girl. What should have been dealt with as her private situation ended up being a big news story… I’ve certainly pissed off a lot of journos over the years but I’m sad that they’re using the rape of a 12-year-old girl to have a go at me.”

In a strongly worded editorial, written by Michael Cazzulino, The Daily Telegraph says the show is getting a “kick in the groin:”

“With all the subtlety and social consciousness of an in-grown toenail, the program’s hosts yesterday took time out from their regular fat-people-baiting, gay-joke-making, sincerity-faking schedule to exploit the abject stupidity of a witless mother with all the parental sensibilities of a burst eardrum and cheese-level IQ.

“She would have been the perfect patsy for Sydney’s most disgraceful duo, except that, oops, her 14-year-old daughter, hooked up to a lie detector machine and revealing details of her sexual history for the edification of the masses, happened to have been raped as a 12-year-old. What happened, Kyle and Jackie O?”>
