2MG flicks the switch to FM on March 18

After 86 years as 1449 on the AM dial, Mudgee station 2MG is the next commercial radio station to move to FM on March 18.

The station becomes 2MG 97.1 and 101.5 FM after the Australian Media and Communications Authority (ACMA) allocated the station a primary transmitter along with a translator service to cover the Kandos and Rylstone areas. The AM coverage ends in April.

Super Radio Network technicians Ross Arcadia and Ross McClymont spent months at the NSW station refitting the main transmitter site that 2MG will share with sister station Real FM with 4 new Elenos transmitters as well as completing a station refit.

Station Manager Mal Rock and afternoon announcer Chris Mills are both excited for the change. Mills has been at 2MG since 1977, more than half its lifespan, saying:

Can’t wait to listen to the Rolling Stones up loud and clear in FM stereo!

Breakfast announcer and News Editor Craig “Basso” Bassett also marks 23 years with the station this month.

The 2MG weekday lineup:

6-9 Craig Bassett

9-12 John Laws

12-5 Chris Mills
