3WAY-FM celebrates 40 years

In 1985 a notice was put in Warrnambool publication The Standard seeking local interest in starting a community radio station. By July that year an association that they called Community Radio Endeavour Warrnambool (CREW) had come together with a ‘proposed statement of purpose’ to register the station and obtain a public radio broadcasting licence, which was officially granted in September 1990.

From that day 24 hour broadcasting commenced with over 100 volunteers and the station ID 3WAY (standing for Warrnambool And You) was adopted. Some have been with the station since those first days in the mid 80s. The late Mona Swinton started back when the station was CREW FM and the office was in her spare room until they were able to use the ‘dungeon’, as she called it, under some offices, next to the Criterion Hotel. You could have heard her on air with two weekly shows until she was 98.

3WAY-FM 103.7 will mark 40 years with a celebration held on Friday May 16. Anyone involved with the station past or present, listeners and supporters can get more information and RSVP to attend via [email protected].
