4G ads in GM cars by 2015

In an article from Digital Trends, it’s suggested that General Motors are considering allowing companies to stream ads into its MyLink infotainment system, powered by the 4G network.

A partnership with AT&T will see videos streamed to the back seats of new cars via 4G from 2015, in the system that launched in new Chevrolet models last year. GM CEO Dan Akerson sees an opportunity: “With a 4G pipe into a car, you can change the business model almost entirely. You may be able to have a real revenue generating opportunity into the car with – when you come up for example, what happens when the logo shows on your screen and its brought to you by Allstate?”

This forms part of a greater discussion of radio’s future in cars with connectivity. Will radio’s cut of in-car revenue take a hit? Or will there merely be a bigger pie with more wanting a slice? How will on-air output adapt?
