774 ABC Melbourne turns 90

774 ABC Melbourne is this week celebrating it’s 90th birthday.

In the 1920s, the station was known as 3LO before undergoing a name change. It turned 90 year old on Monday.

774 3LO first went to air on 13 October 1924, with an outside broadcast of a performance of ‘La Boheme’ featuring Dame Nellie Melba, from His Majesty’s Theatre.

In 1928, the Sydney-based Australian Broadcasting Company took over the station, and in 1932, the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) was established and took control of the two Melbourne stations.
